Lesson OnDr. Mom - Dr. Dad : Primary Health Care Takes Place in the Homee: Just Say "No" to Drugs

Cause and Effect

When we continue to “touch the hot stove” by repeatedly doing something that is harmful to our bodies, the pain and sense of “dis-ease” gradually increase until it reaches a threshhold that demands our attention. This is the point were we often reach out for help by consulting with the doctor. Unfortunately, modern medicine is not geared to helping us discover the root causes of our health problems and only treats the effect.

The following fictitious story illustrates the problem clearly.

There was once a carpenter who was a little clumsy. He regularly hit his thumb with his hammer. Soon, his thumb became very swollen and inflamed. He went to a doctor who said, “That finger is badly inflamed, let me write you a prescription for an anti-inflammatory.”

The man took the medication and noticed that it helped the thumb a little, but because he kept striking it with the hammer it continued to get worse. The pain was becoming difficult to bear. So the man went to another doctor. This one prescribed a painkiller.

The painkiller really helped take the pain away, but it also made the man’s fingers a little numb so that he wound up hitting his thumb more than ever. Soon the thumb was very raw and badly damaged. So, the man sought out a third doctor, a surgeon, who said, “That thumb is badly diseased, I think we should cut it off before it damages the rest of the body.

Finally, the man went to an herbalist, who took a case history and suggested the man find a different job, since he was obviously too clumsy to be a good carpenter. The carpenter became a salesman and his thumb healed in just a few days.

Although the causes of our health problems are much more subtle than this fictitious character’s, the story clearly illustrates the problem of treating the effect without removing the cause. And to be fair, it isn’t necessarily the doctor’s fault that he continues to treat the effect rather than helping us remove the cause of our dis-ease. Most of us want to continue to slam our finger in the door (i.e., maintain our lifestyle). We want the doctor to wave the magic wand of drugs or surgery over our pain and discomfort and abolish the consequences of our actions.

If you’re looking for the “magic pill” that is going to fix your problems without you having to make any changes in your actions or way of life, then my suggestion is that you continue to utilize modern Western medicine—natural health care isn’t right for you. On the other hand, if you are sick and tired of feeling “sick and tired” and are ready to learn how to stop injuring your body, then you have come to the right place. This book is not only going to show you how to rapidly effect healing when your body is injured, it will also help you learn how to identify the things that are injuring your body so that you can stop causing the damage in the first place.
